We’re updating Soda Core’s license from Apache License 2.0 to the Elastic License 2.0 (ELv2).

Soda Core remains source-available and free to use. The change introduces specific restrictions around commercial software that embeds Soda Core as the data quality engine.

What this means for you

If you use Soda Core to build, run, or extend data quality checks, nothing changes. You can continue using it internally and in production, including internal business use as long as Soda Core is not provided to third parties as a hosted or managed service where the service provides users with access to any substantial set of the features or functionality of Soda Core.

What you can do under ELv2

You may:

  • Use Soda Core freely within your organisation

  • Read, modify, and fork the source code

  • Run Soda Core in production

  • Offer professional services around Soda Core, such as consulting, implementation, training, or support

What ELv2 restricts

You may not:

  • Offer Soda Core as a hosted or managed to third parties as a hosted or managed service, where the service provides users with access to any substantial set of the features or functionality of the software.

  • Circumventing license key functionality or limitations in the software

  • Removing or obscuring licensing, copyright, or attribution notices

Why this change

This license model sustains development of source-available software while preventing scenarios where third parties offer Soda Core as a competing managed service.

The full text of the Elastic License 2.0 is available at https://www.elastic.co/licensing/elastic-license.

Trusted by the world’s leading enterprises

Real stories from companies using Soda to keep their data reliable, accurate, and ready for action.

At the end of the day, we don’t want to be in there managing the checks, updating the checks, adding the checks. We just want to go and observe what’s happening, and that’s what Soda is enabling right now.

Sid Srivastava

Director of Data Governance, Quality and MLOps

Investing in data quality is key for cross-functional teams to make accurate, complete decisions with fewer risks and greater returns, using initiatives such as product thinking, data governance, and self-service platforms.

Mario Konschake

Director of Product-Data Platform

Soda has integrated seamlessly into our technology stack and given us the confidence to find, analyze, implement, and resolve data issues through a simple self-serve capability.

Sutaraj Dutta

Data Engineering Manager

Our goal was to deliver high-quality datasets in near real-time, ensuring dashboards reflect live data as it flows in. But beyond solving technical challenges, we wanted to spark a cultural shift - empowering the entire organization to make decisions grounded in accurate, timely data.
